Best countdown apps and widgets for Android: which suits you?

Compare six Android countdown apps by widgets, repeat dates, backup choices and developer-stated data practices. Find a fit without invented ratings or prices.

Published · Checked

Soon & Then is our own app, being prepared for its first Android beta. This is a source-based comparison, not a claim that we tested these competitors on every phone. We checked their UK-English Google Play listings on 13 October 2026 and our own Android implementation. There is no ranked winner: a photo widget, lunar birthday and cloud-backed collection ask for different things.

Decide what the count needs to do

Start with three questions. Is this a future event, an uninterrupted days-since milestone or an annual occasion? Do you want a plain home-screen count or a photograph with the number? Must the collection move automatically between devices, or would you rather manage a local backup yourself?

Those answers are more useful than comparing screenshots alone. A timer running for twenty minutes is also a different tool from a card counting towards a date next month. Check the date, repeat behaviour and launcher placement before paying for a visual style.

Six choices, with different strengths

The following features are developer-advertised unless the row says source-checked. “Not verified” means we did not establish it, rather than that the app lacks the feature.

Which countdown fits the task?
AppUseful advertised fitCost model and limitation
Time UntilCount-up/down, several repeat intervals, reminders, photo/video backgrounds and Premium cloud backups.Ads and in-app purchases. Premium billing terms and current price not verified.
TheDayBeforeLunar dates, anniversary milestones, Stories, social Recommended events and photo widgets.Ads and in-app purchases. Check which extras you need; current billing terms not verified.
Countdown Widget, SunflowrPhoto backgrounds, anniversary counts and unusual units including heartbeats; strip widgets.Ads and in-app purchases. Larger 4×4/5×5 widgets and banner removal advertised as Premium.
Countdown StarAnnual repeats, per-event time zones, resizable multi-event widgets and wallpaper-inclusive file export.Free with ads; listing specifies a one-time Remove Ads purchase. No currency amount assumed.
Soon, Hugo SoftwarePhotographic covers, widgets and an archive of finished events.Ad-supported tier with two active countdowns; monthly/yearly Premium subscription after advertised trial.
Soon & ThenSource-checked local moments, photo widgets, count-up/down, named zones and unsaved Quick Look.No public install yet. Check current distribution and terms; no cloud-sync service implemented.

Time Until is worth considering when varied recurrence, video styling or cloud backup is central. TheDayBefore has a clearer reason to make the shortlist when lunar dates, personal Stories or community events matter. Sunflowr’s stated strip and larger widget variants are useful to compare with your available grid, not proof of a perfect fit on every launcher.

Countdown Star is a candidate for an event collection with multiple dates visible in one widget and file-based portability. Hugo Software’s Soon serves a photographic countdown-to-memory pattern, with a clearly described subscription tier. It is a different product from Soon & Then, despite the similar word in the name; there is no affiliation implied.

Our own app may suit readers who want local personal dates, independently configured widgets and a quick unsaved calculation. That is a reason to follow its development, not a working install recommendation today. Its ZIP restore replaces the current collection; it is not an automatic multi-device merge.

Compare data practices without turning them into scores

The Play Data safety summaries are provided by developers and can change with region, age and usage. We have not independently audited competitor network traffic. They also describe different things from whether your event database is stored locally.

No sharing does not mean no collection. Likewise, Hugo Software’s local/no-account event description can coexist with its advertising-related Data safety summary; those are separate scopes. Read the current listing and privacy notice for the feature you intend to use. Our local data and backup guide explains the boundaries of widgets, shared images and unencrypted copies in Soon & Then.

Use a small decision checklist

Try one ordinary future date and one past milestone before importing a whole collection. Check whether the past date stays continuous or rolls to the next anniversary. Place the widget on the actual launcher and inspect its date, readability and resize limits. If reminders matter, review Android notification permission and background restrictions; an advertised reminder is not proof of exact delivery under every device state.

For paid features, open the current purchase screen and confirm the amount, currency, billing interval, trial conversion and cancellation conditions. “Free to download” does not imply unlimited features or no advertising. We have deliberately omitted prices rather than converting or guessing them.

Finally, test the backup route before removing an existing app. A file exported by one product is not established to be importable by another. If the decision hinges on appearance, the photo countdown walkthrough shows our app’s actual workflow, and the Android widget guide separates app configuration from launcher placement.

What was checked, and what was not

The listing update dates were 11 October 2026 for Time Until, 20 September for TheDayBefore, 9 October for Sunflowr, 15 September for Countdown Star and 28 August for Hugo Software’s Soon. Features, pricing terms and data summaries may change after those versions. No review scores, download counts, measured search demand or unverified offline guarantees determine this shortlist.
